In this talk, I review telomere biology and its role in health, aging, and disease. Then I show how telomeres are not only a molecular clock for the aging process, but also a major regulator of gene expression though epigenetic effects, the so-called "Telomere position effect over long distances." This new thinking about telomeres implies that there is an optimal telomere length which if maintained could maintain youthful gene expression and thereby youthful function and appearance as we get only chronologically older. Dr. Raffaele gave a talk entitled "Telomeres in 2019: Clinical Applications and Cutting-Edge Developments" at the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine’s World Congress in Las Vegas Nevada.
